Hung Out To Dry

An Installation

International Womens Day 08.03.21

10am - 4pm

Outside The Nourishing Nest

46 Maple Street, Maleny

This installation has been inspired by a movement in Byron Bay Shire to bring awareness to the risk of close to half a million homelessness  women in Australia, the majority of whom are in their 50's.

Hung Out to Dry Meaning. Definition:

To abandon someone who needs help.

Cambridge Dictionary meaning: To allow someone to be punished, criticized, or made to suffer in a way that is unfair, without trying to help them.

Collins English Dictionary:

To be in a very difficult situation where you have been abandoned by the people who previously supported you

Urban Dictionary:

When you've been left alone to face a situation - especially a dangerous or unpleasant situation - the people who just abandoned you have hung you out to dry.

Wikipedia: To abandon someone who is in need or in danger, especially a colleague or one dependent.

Mass exits form cities are pushing housing demand up in small coastal and rural towns. The combined influx of newcomers, hiked up rental costs and disproportionate holiday rentals are driving local elders and single mothers with their children out of long term homes.

It is become normalised that over 60 percent a single person’s income will provide only substandard living conditions. Our elders are living in squalor, mothers are raising children without secure housing, right here, right next door.

I find this unacceptable.

I know I’m not alone in this.

I know that other people find this unacceptable too.

To raise awareness of the issue, the Women’s Village Collective is creating an installation, to break down stigmas, stereo types and outdated ideas that those who face homelessness are drug addicts or unemployed, stigmas writhe in victim-blaming and lacking in real information or practical support.

Many women have not been counted amongst these numbers or declared their own living situation, you may not know about them. Many are working right beside you, by day and sleeping just on your door step, silently. Maybe the mother who slept beside her children in the car last night made your coffee this morning, or ran your company’s marketing meeting for that international Zoom conference.

Driving people out from their established support networks, their children’s schools, their medical support, their emotional support, away from friends and loved ones is not the answer. All members of community, you can do better than this. You can be part of the solution.

The Women’s Village Collective is working around the clock to advocate change and bring groups together to create permanent housing solutions.

Spirited Story From Amy

A Letter from Amy

Dear Heather

I want to thank you personally for finding the strength to make this whole thing happen. I can feel the lump in my throat rise with the emotion and power behind what you're doing, giving voice to so many who can't find theirs and who are frozen from the fear of what it could mean to not have a roof over their heads and be able to keep their children safe. To not wear the stigma and shame attached to finding ourselves in this position,  not because we are a hindrance to society or because we haven't been smart enough to plan for our future, carying the burdens of raising family alone, escaping domestic violence or places that no longer offered safety. A basic human right that seems to have disintegrated under greed and the division of the 'haves' and 'have nots'.

As a mum of teenagers, I often have extra young persons here for months or weeks or a night here and there as they find themselves homeless or unable to feel safe at home due to family circumstances.  We have a huge culture in Maleny of no regard at all for our youth, no support services or safe places for them to gather and the ones I know are very sensitive to the fact that the community view them as nuisances and loitering lost causes.
Most of theses young people come from one parent families and almost a hundred percent of the time it's mum who is doing her best.
Our affluent community has a very sad case of denial.

A Spirited Story

"Thank you beautiful Heather, for listening, for caring and for your strength to stand up for those who can't always find their voice or the energy to fight for themselves"

A Spirited Story

"I have been left not option in my past, due to circumstances of hardship, but to leave four homes and gardens that I load while raising three children/teenagers. I know what it feels like to be uncertain how you are going to put food on the table for your children, or afraid you won't have enough money to pay at the checkout.

Fortunately, those most difficult times have passed. I have great empathy for those women in despair of having no home. I cannot stand by and not help in some way.
