Once upon a time, in the time before time, a young women in her early thirties set out into the Forest, on a quest to find and recover some of the jewels that she had been blessed with by faerie folk at birth. These beautiful jewels had ensured safe passage through darkness for her, and when they were stolen at three years of age, she found herself feeling lost and unbalanced when faced with adversity and/or significant change. Her experience left her with a vow of silence that she had no idea how to break through. She did her best however, and grew up to have a family of her own.
There came a day when the woman lost her capacity to speak, due to feeling shut downtime and time again by someone she loved, and she could no longer care for her children the way she had been. Living had become too hard, and this day the woman decided she must leave her family and seek the help of the faerie folk in the forest, or else, she realised, she would die.
Stumbling along a path in the Forest, weary and forlorn, the woman felt compelled to take a rest, finding a tree stump to sit on. As she sat down, she noticed a huge red-barked tree a few feet from where she sat. The Spirit of the Tree instantly called out to the woman, and soon she found her own spirit being drawn into its field. She felt herself grow smaller and smaller until she was the size of the small ants crawling at the base of the tree. Everything around her slowed down around her and she could see every detail of the grass growing at the foot of the tree. The patterns in the red bark of the tree were now like huge grooves and pathways. She was conscious of floating, rather than walking, and soon a gentle breeze began to move her toward a portal of light at the base of the tree. Here, she followed the roots of the tree into the depths of the earth in the World Below where she had lost her jewels many years earlier.
In the World Below, the woman now saw almost everything as luminous green, with other bright colours appearing here and there. She could see figures amongst the fog of green, and recognised these as herself at different ages and stages in years gone by. Finally the drifting stopped in front of small child dressed in a beautiful blue dress. The child reached out her left hand, and put her right hand to her lips, beckoning her to remain silent as she pulled her toward a dark hole at the end of a path to the East. They floated together and stopped outside a small, dark building, peering through a clouded window. The woman could make out two figures, one very small, and another large and menacing, towering over her. At once she felt sick and quickly pulled the child into her arms, and together they floated high above the building into the clouds, the World Above.
Angels greeted the woman carrying the small child and wrapped them both in their arms and wings. At once, the woman’s rapidly beating heart calmed, as she released the child to the care of the angels. She knew she must travel alone to do what was necessary to retrieve her what she needed from the Forest to restore her to health and wellbeing. She knew that it would liberate her heart, body, mind and spirit when she retrieved and restored the blessings that had been bestowed upon her soul by the faeries at birth. An angel carrying a blue sword took her by the hand, and they flew to World Below again into a great forest filled with trees with red course bark, much like the one she had first seen. She came to know these as Redwoods and felt very safe in their presence. They were singing to the woman and angel, welcoming them into the forest. She sensed they knew who she was and why she was there, more so even then the woman herself!
When they landed in the forest, the kind-hearted angel looked into the woman’s eyes and she recognised him as her guardian who had watched over her in her early childhood. Without words he gave her his sword and told her she needed to venture into the Woodlands and find the faeries who had blessed her with jewels at birth, telling them they had been taken from her when she was three. They would know what to do.
The woman thanked the angel, took his sword and found now she could walk rather than float. As she set off to the West, to where the angel had pointed, the woman felt both afraid and excited. While she was afraid of the darkness of the forest, at the same time she was excited by the prospect of meeting the fairies whom she had never forgotten. A song came to her from somewhere deep in her soul as she walked, and she began to sing out loud, as an invitation to the fairies to find her.
Beauty and bounty once surrounded me,
Love and harmony blessed the whole of me.
I am Child of Grace,
Daughter of Sacred Space.
These blessings, once lost,
I wish to abound once more in me.
The sword came in handy for the woman, but not in the way she feared. In the past she had been chased by monsters in her dreams, and she thought they might find her here. Soon she realised the sword was for lifting and moving cobwebs that concealed the secret path she was on, until finally she came to a clearing in the Woodlands. This clearing was filled with luminous light and a feeling of freedom came to the woman that she had never felt before. It was as if her soul was liberated from all the darkness and despair it had experienced. There was only light in this place. The woman began to hear the song she had been singing being sung to her from the centre of this light, where she saw a group of faeries standing in a circle holding hands. In the centre of the circle lay a small baby, wrapped in a pale blue soft blanket. She had soft golden ringlets of hair on her head and green/grey eyes. The baby girl was looking up at the adoring faces surround her, kicking out her chubby legs and arms as they sang to her:
Beauty and bounty now surround you,
Love and harmony eternally bless you.
You are a Child of Grace,
Daughter of Sacred Space.
These blessings, once lost,
Now abound in you.
The baby was held by the angel who had given her the sword, and she walked toward him, as the faeries broke the circle and allowed her through. She lay the sword down on the earth at the angel’s feet, and held out her arms. The angel looked lovingly into the eyes of the baby and passed her into the arms of the woman. The faeries sang even more beautifully now as the woman held the baby in her arms and felt beautiful, loving and powerful blessings infiltrate into her very soul. The woman, feeling whole for the first time that she could remember, danced with the baby in her arms, and spun round in circles with her eyes closed, until finally falling to the earth, sobbing with joy. She fell into a deep trance sleep, the baby safe in her arms.
When the woman woke, she was curled up at the base of the Redwood Tree where she had begun her journey of retrieval and restoration. The ants were small again, and as she stood up, she was careful not to tread on them. The colours and sounds of the forest were brighter and clearer than they had ever been.
The woman walked home, to the East, singing the song the faeries had blessed her with, a smile on her face, and a light in her heart that could never again be dimmed. The light of Liberation.
